    Demo-Site Summary

This multifamily dwelling unit (MDU) built in 1984 includes 12 residential units over four floors, the walls are composed of reinforced concrete post and beam structure with pre-cast insulated concrete panel infill, rendered on both sides.. As all dwellings are individually heated on different time schedules, total energy consumption is estimated in the range 145~175 kWh/m²∙year. All windows are single-pane.

Location: Comune di Campi Bisenzio, via Marconi 12-14, Italy

Size: Lot size is approximately 2,800 square metres. The building envelope is composed of approximately 1,100 square metres of façade and 360 square metres of flat roof.

The EnergyMatching solutions at the Italian Demo-Site

EnergyMatching Tool

The EnergyMatching Tool supported the preliminary design of the PV system in the multifamily dwelling unit of Campi Bisenzio. Indicating position and capacity of the PV modules, and also capacity of the electric storage, the tool suggested the optimal solution according to the specificities of the building (geometry and energy demand), the technologies (costs and technical features) and the context (irradiation conditions and electricity cost). The tool provided a set of indicators, as a precious insight on the PV system expected performance.

Solar Window Block

The Solar Window Block is a prefabricated, autonomous and multifunctional window block that integrates an insulating frame, a highly efficient window, integrated, motorised and automated shading venetian blinds, decentralised ventilation unit with heat recovery, PV module and battery to feed the ventilation machine. In the Italian demo case building, the Solar Window Block uses a configuration with a vertical PV below the windows.

Onyx has manufactured the glass-glass PV modules and Tulipps together with Plastica the substructures to install the PV module. Pellini has provided the shading devices together with their actuators and remote control hub. Eurofinestra has manufactured the window and insulating frame, as well as provided and integrated all the rest of required components in the Solar Window Block system.

BIPV Click-&-Go System

The BIPV Click-&-Go System is a combined EnergyMatching solution utilizing TULiPPS Click-&-Go Substructure integrating BIPV glass-glass and/or composite modules by Onyx and Tecnalia.

At the Italian Demo-Site two different BIPV modules are used, the ONYX lightweight glass-glass BIPV module and the Tecnalia composite roof BIPV module (picture on the right).

Versatile Click-&-Go Substructure

The system is designed for fast and easy mounting and is used for all four PV-applications on the Italian building:

  • Composite modules on the roof are mounted overlapping each other (overlapping pitched roof system)
  • Glass/glass modules on the roof are mounted flat (flat mounted pitched roof system)
  • Parapet modules are mounted flat as facade mounting system (facade mounting system)
  • Solar window block modules mounted with the same facade click-&-go system

Renewable harvesting package for heat and ventilation

It is a combination of EnergyMatching technologies to form a package to heat, cool and ventilate the building, being managed by different levels of control optimizing the energy produced and consumed on site.

At the Italian demo site, the package is meant to use the pre-heat air from the SolarWall technology (that is a transpired solar thermal collector-pictured on the right) mounted on the façade to improve the NIBE heat pump COP. Ventilation strategies are adopted through a heat recovery ventilation unit integrated in the SolarWindowBlock to optimize indoor environmental quality and energy consumption.
